Things That Stick Out: Dollar Dumped as Government Shutdown Appears Likely

Ad day for the dollar here, taking out last month’s lows in earnest as Congress appears to have arrived at an impasse over the fiscal 2026 budget two weeks ahead of the Sept. 30 deadline to avert a government shutdown.

In short, Republicans want a ‘clean’ Continuing Resolution (free of partisan policy riders) through Nov. 20 to allow time to finish negotiating FY 26 appropriations, temporarily funding the government at FY 2025 levels.

Democrats want the CR to include various healthcare-related subsidies and provisions.

Both sides have staked out immovable positions and convinced themselves that the other team will take the blame for a shutdown.

Expect headlines to begin rolling in when a draft of the CR hits the House floor later today or tomorrow.
