Dr. Trung Thanh Nguyen is a Reader in Operational Research and a co-director of the Liverpool Logistics, Offshore and Marine (LOOM) Research Institute, which is a leading research institute in risk assessment, safety analysis, and transport/logistics.

He is leading a research group on optimisation, simulation and operational research, with focuses on maritime, transport (rail and road), logistics and IoT problems.

He is working on solving various combinatorial problems such as vehicle scheduling, vehicle fleet sizing, vehicle routing, bin packing, berth planning, seat allocation for trains, minimising train delays, crane trajectory optimizing, container stacking, vessel stowage planning, container loading, yard layout design problems. He is also leading research on using data analytics to study transportation systems and improve transportation operations. He also carry out exploratory research on emerging areas of logistics such as the Physical Internet, modular load units, LNG logistics chains, port-centric logistics and automation in logistics. His group is developing online and offline 3D simulations of complex systems to study what-if analyses of different operational scenarios and also to validate the optimal results found by the group's optimization algorithms.
