Profile

Dr. Riaan van der Westhuizen is a Consulting Radiation Protection Specialist with more than 30 years of experience in the management of Naturally Occurring Radioactive Material (NORM) within the mining and minerals processing industries. He serves as a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) ENVIRONET Steering Committee and contributed to the IAEA Safety Report Series No. 78. He has presented numerous technical papers at NORM conferences, serving on the scientific committees of some.

His areas of expertise include radiological risk assessment, environmental radiation monitoring, radiation protection programme development, regulatory compliance and the integration of radiation protection into management systems within complex industrial operations. He is particularly recognized for his practical approach to addressing radiation protection challenges in mining and mineral processing environments, ensuring that scientific principles are effectively translated into operational controls and sustainable management practices.

Dr. van der Westhuizen is committed to advancing radiation protection science and practice through the application of sound scientific principles, evidence-based decision-making and active participation in national and international technical initiatives.
