Dr. Abel Julio GONZÁLEZ is a diploma engineer from the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Buenos Aires (UBA). He has specialized in the engineering of radiation and radioactivity monitoring, radiation protection and nuclear safety. He is a full member of the National Academy of Sciences of Buenos Aires, of the Argentine Academy of Environmental Sciences, of the Academy of the Sea, of Argentina, and of the International Nuclear Energy Academy. He is currently a senior advisor to the Nuclear Regulatory Authority (ARN) of Argentina and, as such, member of the Argentine delegation to the General Conference and the Board of Governors of the IAEA of which he was Deputy Governor for Argentina.
He is also a member of the United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation (UNSCEAR), of the Commission of Safety Standards of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and of the Committee on Radiological Protection and Public Health of the Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA) of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). At the international level, he has been: (i) Director of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in the areas of its competence (from 1987 to 2005); (ii) Vice President of the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP); and, (iii) Vice President of the International Radiation Protection Association (IRPA) and President of its IRPA XII international Congress.
