Se-Jin Lee obtained his A.B. from Harvard College and M.D. and Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine (1989). After spending 25 years on the faculty at Johns Hopkins, Lee moved to Connecticut, where he is Professor at University of Connecticut and at The Jackson Laboratory. Lee discovered numerous members of the TGF-ß superfamily of signaling molecules, which he named GDFs (Growth/Differentiation Factors), and is best known for his discovery of one of these, GDF-8 (which he renamed myostatin), as a master regulator of skeletal muscle mass. In recognition of this work, he has received various honors, including the Rolf Luft Award (Karolinska Institute), Ho-Am Prize in Medicine, Passano Award, and election to the National Academy of Inventors and National Academy of Sciences.
