Team Leader for Plastics and Packaging at European Commission, DG ENVIRONMENT

Dr. Wolfgang Trunk graduated in agronomy from the University of Hohenheim, Germany. Subsequently, he did his PhD thesis about “Economic evaluation of strategies to reduce emissions of harmful gases, including greenhouse gases, from dairy farms”.

He served for six years in the Federal Ministry for Agriculture before becoming agricultural and veterinary attaché at the Permanent Representation of Germany to the EU.

In March 2005, he moved to the European Commission`s DG SANTE to work in the field of food and feed safety.

Since 2022, he works in DG Environment in the area of circular economy. In May 2023, he was appointed team leader for the Waste Framework Directive, including related waste streams such as biowaste, construction & demolition, textiles and waste oils, the Packaging and Packaging Waste Directive and the EU rules on sewage sludge, hazardous substances in waste and landfilling.

In October 2025, he was appointed team leader for plastics and packaging in Directorate “Competitive circular economy & clean industrial policy”
