Thai Ethanol Industry: Transformation for Supporting Thailand's Carbon Neutrality and Net Zero
- The Thai ethanol industry has been developed since 1985, which officially commercialized in 2003. After Covid-19 crisis, there is an increase in home-based activities, together with very aggressive policy promoting electric vehicle (EV) by the Thai government, fuel consumption will be affected significantly by 2050.
- There are many ongoing project studies, in Thailand, diversifying ethanol to new products such as Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), Bio ethylene, and industrial grade ethanol. Products and technology availability themselves are not too difficult, but the most challenges are governments policy, deregulation, and balance of existing supply and new demands.
- At COP28, Thailand emphasized its commitment to reducing carbon emissions and transitioning to a green economy, seeking international support and financial assistance to achieve these ambitious goals – Efforts to integrate technology and innovation
- Seksan Phrommanich - Vice Chairman (Biofuels), Renewable Energy Industry Club, the Federation of Thai Industries (RE-FTI)

Panel Discussion: Charting the Future of Renewable Energy in Transportation: Balancing EV and Ethanol Adoption in India and Thailand
- How can policy makers in the energy and agriculture sectors collaborate to optimize the balance between electric vehicles (EVs) and ethanol-powered internal combustion engines, considering the unique challenges and opportunities in India and Thailand?
- With the increasing demand for EVs potentially impacting ethanol consumption, what strategies can be implemented to ensure a smooth transition while sustaining the ethanol industry's growth and relevance?
- Considering climate commitments such as achieving net zero or carbon neutrality by 2050, what role does ethanol production play in the broader renewable energy landscape, particularly in the context of Thailand's sugar industry and its weather-related challenges?
- How can Thailand leverage its ethanol production capacity beyond transportation fuel, such as exploring applications in bioplastics or other innovative industries, and what policy support is needed to facilitate this diversification?
- Drawing from the experiences of proactive ethanol programs in countries like India and Brazil, what lessons can Thailand learn to enhance its ethanol initiatives, and how can government support be strengthened to accelerate ethanol adoption and market penetration?
