John Toomey

John Toomey is the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of HarbourVest Partners and has served in that capacity since October 1, 2024. He is based at the Firm’s headquarters in Boston.

Prior to his appointment as CEO, John served on the Executive Management Committee (EMC), which led the firm, since 2012. He joined the firm in 1997 as an Analyst in the Direct team and spent ten years as one of the leaders of the Secondary business before serving on Global Investment Committees for nearly a decade. He was also involved in the 2007 IPO of HarbourVest Global Private Equity on Euronext Amsterdam for which he served as the original Chief Financial Officer.

John is a member of the Firm’s Conflicts Committee, ESG Council, and DEI Council.

He received a BA (cum laude) in Chemistry and Physics from Harvard University and an MBA from Harvard Business School, where he was awarded the Loeb Fellowship for outstanding achievement in finance.
