Steve Klinsky is the Founder and CEO of New Mountain Capital, a New York-based investment firm that emphasizes non-cyclical growth and business building. New Mountain manages over $55 billion of assets across four asset classes, and has generated over $87 billion of private equity enterprise value gains for all shareholders since the firm’s inception, without one bankruptcy or missed interest payment ever. Prior to founding New Mountain in 1999, Klinsky was co-founder of Goldman Sachs’ original Private Equity group (1981-1984), and a senior-level transaction partner at Forstmann Little & Co. (1984-1999) in that firm’s years of peak performance.
Mr. Klinsky received his B.A. in Economics and Political Philosophy, with high honors, from the University of Michigan in 1976. He received his M.B.A. from Harvard Business School (class of 1979) and his J.D., with honors, from Harvard Law School (class of 1981). He is or has been chairman or a director of numerous corporations, and the founder or leader of numerous philanthropies, including ModernSates.org (the nation’s largest free college-for-credit charity, with 700,000 users); Johns Hopkins’ Gupta-Klinsky Institute in India; Sisulu-Walker (New York State’s first ever charter school); and others.
