Profile
Michael invests directly at the security level and indirectly as an asset allocator in traditional and alternative asset classes for institutions and family offices. He has managed, lead and built investment businesses, including distribution and client relation teams. Previously Michael was Managing Director and Head of Alternative Investments at First Republic; he was a Managing Director, member of the Investment Committee and served on the board of directors at APG, a Dutch pension provider; he was Chief Investment Officer at MOV37 and Protege Partners; a portfolio manager and global head of equities at FRM, a multi-strategy investment solutions provider; he was a portfolio manager at Credit Suisse and Soros, the macro fund, foundation and family office; and he started his career as an analyst at Morgan Stanley. Michael is an Adjunct Professor of Economics and Finance at Columbia Business School, where he teaches Institutional Investing, an MBA course that he created.
He is active in many non-profit organizations and industry groups. Michael co-founded The Artificial Intelligence in Finance Institute and Project Punch Card; a not-for-profit organization whose mission is to facilitate investment careers for underrepresented groups. Michael is on AIMA’s Global Investor Board, the management advisory council for the Michael Price Student Investment Fund and was previously on The Milken Institute’s Global Capital Markets Advisory Council. Additionally, he is a Special Advisor to The Tokyo University of Science’s endowment and is a member of The Economic Club of New York. Michael has researched the impact of AI on finance for The World Economic Forum, and, as a former Chair at CFANY, he received multiple awards including Volunteer of the Year.
Michael is a published author, having written for The New York Times, international investment books, and other publications, and has been interviewed by world leading print and online media. The Journal of Impact and ESG Investing published an academic paper that he co-authored, that incorporated machine learning techniques. Michael co-founded the podcast Improving Alpha: Innovation in Investing, ESG and Technology, and he is frequently invited to serve as a panelist or lecturer at forums organized by wealth management, institutional and family office organizations. Michael has a BS from New York University and an MBA from Columbia Business School.
