Kev McLean is a Lecturer in Policing within the School of Law and Justice Studies at Liverpool John Moores University, joining academia following a thirty-year career in policing. Retiring at the rank of Detective Chief Superintendent, most recently Kev was the Head of Borders and International Strategy for Counter Terrorism Policing, responsible for national security matters across UK ports, airports, and international counter-terrorism capabilities. Kev has a specific interest in the influence of migration and travel routes on the UK’s terrorist threat, counter terrorism legislation employed at the UK border, and the UK’s international footprint and response to foreign based threats. During his policing career, Kev has held a range of senior leadership roles including Head of Serious and Organised Crime, Director of Intelligence, and Authorising Officer for covert policing activities. He is an experienced investigator and is accredited as a PIP Level 3 and Level 4 Senior Investigating Officer, specialising in major crime, serious and organised crime, and kidnap and extortion. Kev holds a master’s degree in criminal justice studies from Liverpool John Moores University, with a particular research interest in police culture. He currently designs and delivers undergraduate and post graduate curricula focussing on Terrorism, Serious Organised Crime, and Investigations.
