When a presenter invites an audience into a story, even with something as simple as "I'd like to share something that happened recently," the brain enters a state of neurocoupling, in which the listener's neural patterns begin to synchronise with those of the speaker. Attention sharpens. Recall improves. The emotional centres of the midbrain become active, which means the information that follows the story is more likely to be stored, referenced later, and acted upon.
This has direct implications for how data-heavy slides should be structured. A financial result that opens with a brief narrative context, the challenge the team faced, the decision that was made, the moment the numbers shifted, will be received and retained more effectively than the same numbers presented in isolation.
