Profile

Wasseem Emam is a leading aquatic ecologist and fish welfare researcher with over 15 years of wide-ranging international experience across the fisheries and aquaculture sectors. His work bridges applied science, policy and field practice, underpinned by advanced degrees in aquatic ecology and a current doctorate in veterinary medicine, focusing on improving the welfare of farmed Nile tilapia during harvest.

In 2021, he founded Ethical Seafood Research, a pioneering non-profit advancing animal welfare in fishing and aquaculture through practical, evidence-based solutions. His work has supported leading institutions including the United Nations, European Parliament, UK and Canadian governments, WorldFish, WWF, and the Aquaculture Stewardship Council.

Wasseem’s projects span Europe, North America, Africa, and the Middle East, where he is originally from. He brings a rare combination of scientific rigour, policy fluency, and grassroots insight, championing a future where seafood production respects the sentience of aquatic animals and supports sustainable, ethical food systems.
