Donald Gullberg, PhD, has been trained as a biochemist at the University of Uppsala, Sweden. After obtaining a PhD at Uppsala University in 1990 on a thesis dealing with collagen-binding integrins he did a postdoc at UCLA in the laboratory of John and Lisa Fessler on a D. melanogaster integrin-related project. Upon returning to Uppsala University in 1992 he became an independent researcher in the Department of Animal Physiology headed by Peter Ekblom. Since 2004 he is Professor at Department of Biomedicine, University of Bergen where he heads a research group of Matrix biology. He has a long-standing interest in the role of collagen-binding integrins, especially integrin a11b1, which was characterized in his group. He has spent two sabbatical terms at UCSF (2011-2012 in the group of Dean Sheppard; 2017-2018 in the group of Valerie Weaver).
