Carnival season in Cologne

BIO-Europe concludes on November 11—the same day Cologne's famous Carnival Season officially begins. Prepare yourself for a city transformed into a sea of colorful costumes, cheerful chaos, and spontaneous street parties! At precisely 11:11 in the morning on November 11, Cologne officially kicks off the "fifth season" – Carnival season – and locals take this tradition very seriously.

What's happening

  • November 11 marks the beginning of Cologne's Carnival festivities
  • Up to 100,000 people celebrate this event throughout the city
  • The main Carnival activities and street parades will occur later in February 2027

What to expect

The streets in city center areas will be packed with revelers, especially around:

  • Cathedral ("Dom")
  • Zülpicher Straße
  • Alter Markt and Heumarkt squares

Expect live bands, street performers, and spontaneous sing-alongs. The traditional Carnival cry of "Kölle Alaaf!" (Cologne above all!) will echo through the streets approximately every 30 seconds.

Important to know

  • Crowds can form spontaneously all over Cologne, as most people are out on the streets celebrating
  • It will take longer to get from A to B
  • Trains may be cancelled or take longer than usual, especially metro and light rail (Stadtbahn)
  • Taxis may also take longer, as crowds can disrupt traffic
  • It can take a long time to get into train stations, especially in the city center and the central station ("Hauptbahnhof")

Where to book your hotel

🟢 Köln Messe/Deutz: Find a hotel near the conference venue Cologne Messe (Kölnmesse), on the right bank of the river Rhine. This area is called Köln Messe/Deutz and has a train station of the same name that is a 15-20 minute walk from the conference venue.

🟢 Mülheim: The district north of Deutz also offers great accommodation options with convenient access to the venue via Stadtbahn (light rail) lines 3 and 4. This area is also close to the Palladium, Tuesday evening's reception venue. Note: Lines 3 and 4 will also be used by carnival goers on November 11.

🔴 Areas to Avoid: If you book on the left side of the river Rhine, avoid hotels located near: Cathedral ("Dom"), Main train station ("Hauptbahnhof" or Hbf), Heumarkt, Zülpicher Straße.

Please see map guidance. Partner hotels displayed through our booking platform HotelMap are pre-filtered to exclude these areas.
