Sugarox

Profile

SugaROx is a University of Oxford and Rothamsted Research spin-out developing single-molecule biostimulants designed to deliver measurable, reliable returns for farmers. Its products are based on naturally occurring bioactivators that boost key metabolic processes inside plant cells. In their natural form, these bioactivators carry a strong charge that limits their uptake when sprayed onto plants. SugaROx overcomes this barrier using temporary chemical cages that enable absorption into plant cells. Founded in 2021, SugaROx is building a pipeline of precision biostimulants, with its first product based on a caged version of trehalose-6-phosphate (T6P). An initial series of 16 wheat field trials across 5 countries demonstrated an average yield increase of 8%. Collaboration is central to SugaROx’s B2B business model. By combining its scientific expertise with partners’ market knowledge, field trial capabilities and distribution channels, SugaROx aims to accelerate product validation and commercialisation. For instance, collaboration with The Mosaic Company, its strategic investor, enabled a tenfold expansion of US validation trials in 2026, demonstrating how corporate and start-up partnerships can bring the next generation of biostimulants closer to market.
