Gerben is a regular speaker on process intensification (PI), process integration and continuous biomanufacturing. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Wageningen (The Netherlands) in the field of process integration in animal cell culture. Altogether, he has worked for more than 25 years in the BioPharma Industry amongst others in the CDMO business at Patheon developing commercial Bio-therapeutics, as well as Process Intensification projects in Single Use bioreactors. He is first inventor of the XD® Concentrated Fed-Batch technology, boosting productivity up to 5 fold, and involved in its scale-up and tech transfer the Brisbane (Australia) site, which received the ISPE facility of the year award for process innovations. Subsequently, as a Sr. Consultant at Xendo, has been working on cutting edge SU Continuous BioManufacturing platforms, as well as Gene Therapy projects. At Sartorius-Stedim Biotech Gerben has been involved in several in-house PI technology developments and improvements, as well as external collaborations and acquisitions. Currently he holds a position as Bioprocess Solutions Expert, working with external partners to further improve the Sartorius PI technology portfolio for the benefit of the BioPharma industry.
