Amilia Busby is a maritime professional and seafarer currently sailing as a 3rd Engineer onboard aggregate dredgers with Heidelberg Materials. She stumbled across the maritime industry, through an unconventional route, with no prior mechanical knowledge.

Having built her career at sea from within the engine room, Amilia brings first-hand experience of the realities, challenges and opportunities faced by today’s seafarers.

Alongside her role onboard, Amilia is the founder of ShipMates Network, a platform created to connect and support seafarers worldwide. ShipMates aims to foster a stronger sense of community at sea, improve wellbeing, encourage open conversations around the realities of life onboard, and provide a supportive network for seafarers throughout their careers. Truly understanding the struggles of seafarers all over the world is at the heart of what she does.

Passionate about the future of the maritime industry, Amilia is also a Careers at Sea Ambassador and a cadet mentor with Watermark Training Group, helping to inspire and guide the next generation of maritime professionals.

Amilia is an active speaker at maritime conferences and exhibitions, using her platform to champion the seafarer voice and ensure that those working at sea are represented in the conversations shaping the future of the industry. She believes seafarers’ voices should be heard loudly, recognised and acted upon, because without seafarers, there simply is no shipping industry.

Amilia has been recognised as the #1 woman seafarer in All About Shipping’s Top 100 Women in Shipping list and was most recently named the only woman among the Top 5 in Spinnaker’s 30 Under 30 maritime professionals list.

Through her engineering career, advocacy and work with ShipMates Network, Amilia is passionate about breaking down barriers into maritime careers, championing seafarers’ voices and ensuring that wellbeing, community and the human side of shipping remain central to conversations about the future of the industry.
