Dr. Toby Abaya has been a licensed doctor for more than 30 years. Following nine years of surgical training in Europe, he came back to the Philippines, and while building up his surgical practice, he was introduced to the field of maritime medicine. Dr. Abaya has spent the last 15 years working with Filipino seafarers and has been personally involved in all the aspects of this area of specialization. He has covered the gamut of doing actual pre-employment physical examinations, providing medical consultation for seafarers and their families, including telemedicine consultation for seafarers on board in need of immediate medical attention. He also manages the cases of repatriated seafarers and has been involved in the selection of doctors for cruise ships.

Dr. Abaya’s vast experience has allowed him to do valuable research in maritime medicine and he has published a number of his industry-wide studies. He presently serves as Medical Director of Health Metrics, Inc., a leading multi-branch network pre-employment diagnostic center and still very much enjoys working with seafarers. His passion is to ensure that his patients are and can remain healthy, particularly on their tours of duty and extend their well being even when they are at home.
