Head of Medisea and Industry Relations at Shipowners' P&I Club

Hemant Phul is Head of Medisea and Industry Relations at the Shipowners' P&I Club, with responsibility for the club's seafarer health programme and its engagement across the maritime industry, based out of Singapore.

He joined the club in 2025 following a career spanning seafaring, marine salvage and casualty consultancy. Hemant completed his nautical studies in Singapore and spent seven years at sea on container ships, serving as Nautical Officer. He then spent sixteen years in marine salvage with one of the world's largest casualty response companies, beginning in the field as a Salvage Master before moving into operations management and later serving as Director for the Asia Pacific region. He subsequently spent two and a half years as a salvage consultant, advising P&I clubs, hull and machinery insurers and shipowners on casualty management and response strategy.

In his current role, Hemant has moved from the response side of the industry to the prevention side. Medisea is the Shipowners' P&I Club's pre-employment medical examination programme, available to the club's members and currently operating across eight countries in South and South East Asia through a network of more than one hundred clinics. Each clinic is audited to confirm that the correct examinations are carried out to the required standard. The programme assesses a seafarer's health before they join a vessel and goes beyond the requirements of MLC 2006, applying a broader range of tests to give owners and seafarers a clearer picture of fitness for sea service. Alongside the programme, Hemant leads the club's industry relations, representing it across the shipping, insurance and crewing communities.

Hemant is an Associate Fellow of the Nautical Institute. Apart from his Nautical Certifications, he holds a postgraduate qualification in business development, marine insurance, a FlexiMasters in General Management, and is currently studying artificial intelligence at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore.
