Karin StaalConsultant - Martime Expert at Staal MaritimeSpeaker
Profile
Karin Staal is an independent maritime consultant and former seafarer who has built her career around one central belief: sustainable change only happens when people feel informed, involved and empowered.
Drawing on her experience at sea and in a variety of shore-based roles in crewing and training, Karin brings a practical understanding of both operational realities and organisational challenges. Her expertise spans crewing and competence management, sustainable employability, organisational change, process improvement, psychological safety and inclusive leadership.
Karin supports maritime organisations in translating complex challenges into practical, people-centred solutions. Whether she is implementing new ways of working, developing competence management frameworks, advising leaders or facilitating workshops, she focuses on creating environments in which people can contribute, develop and perform at their best. She is known for combining strategic thinking with a direct, pragmatic approach and for connecting policy and ambition to what actually happens in the workplace and on board.
A strong advocate for diversity and inclusion, Karin challenges the maritime industry to move beyond representation alone and consider what genuine inclusion requires in practice. She believes inclusive leadership is not a separate initiative, but an essential capability for any leader working with diverse teams in an increasingly complex industry.
As Chair of the WISTA International Diversity Committee, Karin promotes collaboration, inclusion and better leadership across the global maritime community. Through this role, as well as her consultancy, training and speaking engagements, she encourages organisations to move beyond conversation and turn good intentions into meaningful action.
At the heart of Karin’s work is a genuine passion for people and for building a maritime industry in which everyone feels supported, heard and able to thrive.
