Profile
Petros N. Achtypis is the founder and CEO of Prevention at Sea (PAS) and a long-standing advocate for proactive safety in shipping. He is a Naval Architect and Marine Engineer and graduated from the National Technical University of Athens in 2003.
He spent more than 12 years in shipping companies as Designated Person Ashore and later HSQE Manager. That experience convinced him that shipping needed a better way to spot risk before it turns into an incident. He is also an ILO-certified MLC 2006 Trainer and Inspector and an ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 Lead Auditor.
In 2013, he founded Prevention At Sea. The company began by offering expert assurance services, including pre-vetting, audits and PSC readiness, built on his background in SMS simplification, investigations and risk assessment.
Under his leadership, PAS moved into technology. It created the world's first digital oil record book, which became the official e-ORB of the Liberian Registry and was approved by several other flag states. This grew into MORSE, a compliance and due diligence platform now used on more than 3,000 vessels.
Petros believes a ship is only as strong as her crew. In 2018, PAS launched ImmerSEAv, the world's first virtual reality assessment of seafarer behaviour and competence, developed with the University of Cyprus and the CYENS Centre of Excellence. Seafarers complete realistic VR scenarios, from daily operations to emergencies.
PAS's work has earned two Lloyd's List Awards, the 2017 NAMEPA Innovation Award, a Tanker Shipping and Trade Technical Award, and a place in the 2026 Thetius Top 50 for MORSE and ImmerSEAv.
Petros writes and speaks regularly on safety and technology and moderated the Posidonia 2026 panel on SMS and vetting. His message is simple: compliance should prevent incidents, not just record them, and a competent, confident crew is the best safeguard on any ship.
