Dr Iliana Christodoulou-Varotsi is a legal and academic expert with an international educational and professional background specialised in maritime and EU law. She has been a member of the Athens Bar Association (Greece) for many years and is currently involved with consulting work, legal education and training with international clients, including Lloyd’s Maritime Academy and leading ship classification societies. She is also a certified trainer and lecturer (Visiting Lecturer, Carriage of Goods and Marine Insurance, ALBA Graduate Business School at the American College of Greece), as well as an accredited mediator. Visiting fellow (honorary), Southampton Law School. Guest speaker at IMO International Maritime Law Institute (IMLI), Malta. Guest speaker at the Hellenic Naval Academy. She is the author of several books, including with international publishers (Springer/Germany and Informa law from Routeldge/UK). She raises awareness within the Greek shipping community by writing industry articles on legal topics for leading maritime magazines.

In her capacity as an external consultant, she has assessed the conformity of domestic legislations of EU Member States and candidate countries with EU law in the frame of various EU-funded projects. She has contributed to the drafting of numerous ratification statutes for the harmonisation of the maritime law of a major maritime country with EU law as well as for the ratification of ILO MLC 2006.

She is a graduate (Maîtrise) of the Faculty of Law of the University of Paris I Panthéon-Sorbonne (France) and a holder of a postgraduate degree (D.E.A.) in European and international law from the same University. She is also a Doctor of Laws with the highest distinction (University of Paris I Panthéon-Sorbonne). Her thesis addressed the adaptation of Greek and Cypriot maritime law to EC law. She has post-doctoral research experience with the Scandinavian Institute of Maritime Law in maritime safety law and policies.
