Joseph Terranova
Senior Managing Director at Virtus Investment Partners
Speaker

Profile

Terranova is involved with Virtus’ investment oversight function and represents Virtus as a client-facing thought leader, providing insight into the domestic and global multi-asset investment landscape. Terranova developed the Terranova US Quality Momentum Index (VTUSQM) which launched and began publicly pricing in August 2020. The index methodology, seeking to provide systematic exposure to domestic large-cap companies exhibiting both quality and momentum characteristics, reflects the investing principles in which Terranova has utilized to assess markets throughout his career. In November of 2020, Virtus Investment Partners introduced a Nasdaq listed ETF (JOET), that seeks to track the performance of the Terranova US Quality Momentum Index. As of February 2025, the JOET ETF has $170 million in AUM.

Prior to joining Virtus Investment Partners in early 2008, Terranova spent 18 years at MBF Clearing Corp., rising to the position of Director of Trading for the company and its subsidiaries. His work was highlighted as the feature story in the June 2004 issue of Futures magazine. Terranova is perhaps best known for his risk management skills, honed while overseeing MBF’s proprietary trading operations during some of the most calamitous times for the U.S. markets, including the first Gulf War, the 1998 Asian Crisis, 9/11, and the collapse of Amaranth Advisors. During those times there was never a loss at MBF due to market anomalies. In fact, the firm continued to trade profitably and grow its business.

Terranova graduated from the Peter J. Tobin College of Business at St. John’s University in 1988 with a B.S. in Finance. He is also a 1984 alumnus of Chaminade High School in Mineola, New York. In January 2012 he authored “Buy High, Sell Higher,” published by Grand Central Publishing, a division of Hachette Book Group. Since 2008,

Terranova has been a CNBC ensemble member, appearing regularly on the Halftime Report, Squawk Box, Closing Bell and contributing financial content throughout the CNBC media and digital platforms.
