Steve Penner joined VR Capital Group in 2017 and is based in New York. VR is an alternative asset manager focused on distressed securities and event-driven/special situation investments, with a strong orientation towards emerging markets and approximately $6.2bn in AUM. He also served as Chief Compliance Officer from 2017 through 2022.

Steve was formerly the General Counsel for Investments Trading & Operations at XL Catlin, a Vice President within Morgan Stanley’s prime brokerage business, an Associate at Shearman & Sterling LLP, and has had secondments to each of Bank of America, Eton Park Capital Management and the U.N. International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda.

Steve has a B.A. in economics/political science from Western University and a J.D. from the University of Toronto Faculty of Law.

Steve currently serves on the board of the Hammond Museum and Japanese Stroll Garden and as an assistant coach within the Mamaroneck Youth Hockey Association.
