Dr Ioannis Karaoulanis has been awarded his PhD from the University of Piraeus in the sector of Maritime Economics, with topic “Analysis of dry bulk freight markets using the Cobweb Theorem”, having an immediate impact on the chartering sector. He also holds a master and a bachelor degree from the University of Piraeus, department of Maritime studies.

Dr Karaoulanis is the Head of Shipping, Transport and Logistics department at Business College of Athens (BCA). He was the Dean of the faculty of Shipping and Maritime Studies at Metropolitan College (2022-2025), while he was previously the programme leader at academic institutions since 2014. He started teaching various shipping related modules in 2013. He has taught at Bachelor Level Introduction to Shipping, Shipping Practice, Marine Cargo Operations, Maritime Economics, Shipping Management, Shipping Operations, Chartering I, Chartering II, Chartering Practice. At masters level, he has taught Analysis of Shipping Markets, Chartering: Theory and Practice, Crisis Management in Maritime Operations, Vessel Operations Management.

Dr Karaoulanis has a strong working experience in the shipping industry, having worked in chartering and operations departments in various companies.

His research interest is focused on Maritime Economics and Analysis of dry bulk freight market, on Vessel Operations Management, on Shipping Management and on Chartering Theories and Practices.

He has presented part of his research in international conferences and he has published papers in academic journals with double peer review process. He is also a referee for academic journals, evaluating shipping related papers before publication.
