Roofs are especially vulnerable to extreme weather, making them a major contributor to insurance claims. Existing standards for building enclosure components often overlook the growing frequency of weather shocks and regional climate variations. To address this, the "Climate Dependent Durability Index" has been developed, combining component properties with climate severity to assess long-term performance. Additionally, in collaboration with the Canadian roofing community, the National Research Council (NRC) has supported the creation of "CSA A123.26 – Performance Requirements for Climate Resilience of Low Slope Membrane Roofing Systems." This new standard, the first of its kind, offers comprehensive solutions to improve roof resiliency. This session will cover both the Climate Dependent Durability Index and the CSA A123.26 standard, highlighting their role in enhancing building performance and climate resilience.

The disclosure of ESG data is essential for demonstrating accountability, attracting investors, and achieving sustainability goals. While the GRESB Public Disclosure offers stakeholders an overview of ESG practices among property companies, REITs, and infrastructure firms, the newly introduced Sustainability Disclosure Standards (CSDSs) provides Canadian organizations with a comprehensive framework to align with global reporting standards. This session will explore how building owners and facility managers can harness smart building technologies to collect and benchmark data, ensuring compliance for both existing properties and new construction projects. Additionally, it will highlight how these technologies drive high performance, energy efficiency, and cost savings.

This session will focus on the essential collaboration between owners and roofing design teams in developing effective tender packages for roof improvement projects. Owners should provide insights into their properties, while design teams must articulate the scope of work clearly. Addressing factors like noise control, access, infection protocols, and operational impacts is crucial, particularly in occupied spaces. Including these details in the tender package helps prevent unexpected costs and delays, as contractors need a complete understanding of all restrictions to submit accurate bids. By encouraging open communication and thorough documentation, both parties can better manage risks and enhance project execution. Attendees will gain valuable strategies for improving collaboration and documentation practices, ultimately leading to more successful project outcomes.

Building owners and investors are demanding action on environment, social, and governance matters, and governments are tightening energy and emissions regulations for existing buildings that will lead to net zero carbon goals. This session will introduce changing climate factors and major policies that will drive energy emissions reduction projects and their impact on capital planning. The speakers will discuss how to set building or portfolio goals that align with both external regulations and ownership objectives. Case studies will be presented to showcase a planning process to tackle the retrofit methodology, including developing a retrofit plan, moving beyond “”like-for-like”” building renewals, and how life cycle cost and carbon analyses can help guide retrofit decision making.
This session is open to all pass types.

As roofs age, maintenance costs tend to increase, and the frequency of leaks can surpass tolerance levels. Full roof replacement can be costly, often exceeding budget allocations. However, delaying necessary repairs or replacements can lead to collateral costs from interior damage and concealed deterioration of building components. Fortunately, there are renewal strategies available to lower costs, shorten schedules, reduce material waste and tailor the service life to specific site requirements. This session will provide an overview of typical roof membranes and assemblies. It will highlight the telltale signs that indicate when roof work is needed and explore the available options. Additionally, the presentation will review common roof repair tasks to be completed prior to replacement and cover successful roof renewal techniques that limit site disruption, reduce construction waste, and restore the roof's functionality.
