This session presents the Immersive Cleantech Studio (EPICS), a new cleantech workforce learning platform. Launched this winter as a capacity-building initiative through the BOMA Enspire program and led by BOMA Canada, EPICS responds to the ways cleantech innovations are transforming buildings, operations, and workforce needs. Attendees will discover how this experiential learning environment for building operators and retrofit talent pools uses 3D visualization, virtual reality (VR), and digital twins to replicate real-world building operations. Participants will experience this cutting-edge learning platform, designed to support the transition of the workforce into cleantech careers and advance a more sustainable real estate industry. Cleantech workforce experts and industry leaders will share real-world applications of this innovative tool through video demonstrations, and discuss how the EPICS Studio is helping train building operators to achieve organizational sustainability goals through retrofit training and building performance use cases.

Most buildings are sitting on mountains of data, yet very few are using it effectively to improve operations, reduce risk, or enhance returns. This session offers a practical guide to turning everyday building data into better decisions. Industry experts will explore which data truly matters for operators, how to connect operational and sustainability information into usable insights, and how to shift from reactive problem-solving to proactive performance management. Attendees will see how reporting can move beyond compliance and static dashboards to drive real operational improvements, support capital planning, and strengthen the business case for upgrades. The session offers a grounded, operator-focused look at how data and AI can function as practical management tools to improve performance, resilience, and asset value

Ontario’s purpose-built rental housing stock is maturing, and with that comes evolving expectations around building systems, documentation, and risk management. This session will explore how rental housing providers can strengthen the insurability and long-term performance of aging assets through proactive operational practices and thoughtful capital planning. The discussion will bring together perspectives from insurance, asset management, and professional standards to demystify how risk is assessed in existing rental buildings. The panel will highlight what drives insurer confidence, how to position assets more effectively for underwriting, and the practical steps providers can take today to support resilience, safety, and long-term stability.

Owners are positioning new rental housing to succeed in a rapidly changing regulatory, climate, and investor landscape—yet projects that are not designed for zero-carbon outcomes risk becoming expensive liabilities. This session explores how buildings that are not zero carbon today might end up paying twice: once to build, and again to reverse early design decisions. Drawing on lessons from real-world projects, speakers will provide practical insights into design and investment choices that can either unlock—or severely constrain—future decarbonization pathways. Developers, owners, and asset managers will learn how to protect long-term asset value by optimizing CapEx and OpEx, even at newer operating sites.

This two-part session will provide property managers, owners, and industry professionals with a practical overview of recent changes to construction law in Ontario and their implications for active and future projects. In the first half of the session, speakers will examine key amendments to the Construction Act that came into effect on January 1, including changes to the distribution of holdback and the expanded use of adjudication as a tool to resolve construction disputes during a project. Attendees will gain insight into how these changes affect project oversight, cash flow, and risk management from an owner’s perspective. The second half of the session will focus on recent updates to the CCDC suite of standard form contracts commonly used across the construction industry. The discussion will highlight what has changed, why it matters, and how property managers can navigate these updates to better protect their organizations and support successful project delivery.

As the performance of new buildings continues to improve, the industry faces a growing challenge: many capital plans for existing buildings still rely on like-for-like replacement strategies that fail to meet the expectations of tomorrow’s tenants. With organizations increasingly adopting long-term net zero and decarbonization goals, the limitations of conventional capital repair approaches have become more apparent—and more costly. These challenges, however, present opportunities. By understanding the unique conditions of each building, owners and managers can identify targeted interventions, reduce costs, and strategically position their assets for long-term higher performance. This session examines practical solutions for enhancing the performance of existing buildings, with a particular emphasis on the building envelope. It reviews common issues that undermine performance, explores strategies for effectively phasing capital repairs, and highlights real-world examples from projects across southern Ontario.
