Leo TyrpakPhD Candidate at University of OxfordSpeaker
Profile
I grew up in Belgium with an Irish mum and a French dad so people tend to be confused about my nationality. I’ve always loved maths and doing Maths Olympiads in Belgium was a lot of fun as it gave me a taste for the sort of problems I had never seen before.
I am currently studying Mathematical ecology at Oxford. I started off university preferring the pure side of mathematics but have now learnt to like what the applied side of mathematics can be used for, like giving us plenty of hard problems and fine-tuned intuition. The power of maths to model and infer what happens around us is fascinating. In my subject area we can setup specific rules for how species interact and completely encode this in a mathematical language with differential equations which can give us insight into the system.
I like tennis, badminton and climbing in my free time. I also play Wii sports resorts to relax.
