Jose Freire, PhD, is CEO of SapiensBio, where he leads the development of a potential first-in-class therapy for idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. He received his PhD in Biochemistry from the University of Santiago de Compostela (Spain) and completed postdoctoral training at the Roche Institute of Molecular Biology, studying mechanisms of immunosuppression. Dr. Freire has over 25 years of experience in pharmaceutical and biotechnology R&D and business development, having held senior roles at Syntex, Roche Bioscience, Forest Laboratories, and Merck (MSD). His work has spanned inflammation, immunology, respiratory, and cardiovascular diseases, including leadership of preclinical development programs, regulatory submissions (INDs, NDAs), and evaluation of multiple in-licensing opportunities. At Merck, he served as Executive Director in Business Development for Respiratory and Immunology, contributing to several strategic transactions.
