Mike joined Cunard Line as an apprentice engineer at the age of 17, and climbed the ranks to Chief Engineer gaining experience on a number of vessels and engines. In 1970 he gained a BSc in Nautical Studies from Liverpool John Moores University, where he returned to complete an MSc in Shipping & Maritime Studies.
He has 25 years of experience in hull, machinery and cargo surveying in the USA, New Zealand, Fiji, and South East Asia, as well as 8 years of experience as a lecturer of maritime studies, including 5 years as Senior Lecturer at the Warsash College of Maritime Studies in the UK. He provides a range of consultancy and surveying services to P&I clubs, shipowners and ship managers, underwriters, admirality lawyers and other principals, and is a qualified mediator in both the UK and Hong Kong.
Mike also regularly contributes technical shipping articles to various maritime publications, and is the editor of FLASHLIGHT. He has also published many books, including Marine Warranty Surveying - an Introduction, Marine Surveying and Consultancy - an Introduction and Running a Marine Surveying Company.
