Barry has worked on risk and regulatory affairs in the financial services industry since the mid 1990s, advising many leading banks including JPMorgan, Deutsche Bank, Morgan Stanley, ABN AMRO and NatWest, as well as numerous other firms including brokers, smaller banks, fintechs, data providers, exchanges, clearing houses and fund managers. He spent over two years at the Financial Services Authority in 2009-2011, during which time he worked with colleagues at the Bank of England on the transition to the new PRA. He is a founding partner and director at Smith & Guinan Ltd., providing advice to clients on data management, risk analytics and artificial intelligence. He set up NatWest's central data science function during 2017-2019 as interim Head of Data Science. In 2022, he returned to work with NatWest, where he has acted as a subject matter expert advising on Responsible AI and on compliance with the EU AI Act.
