Michael Grimwade

Head of Operational Risk at ICBC Standard Bank

Michael Grimwade first spoke at RiskMinds 30 years ago, in 1996, in Geneva – the first year that Operational Risk appeared on the conference’s agenda.

He is Head of Operational Risk for ICBC Standard Bank and has previously held senior Operational Risk Management roles at MUFG Securities, RBS, and Lloyds TSB, and prior to that, Michael was a management consultant with PwC and Deloitte Consulting. He has been a Board Member of both the Securities Industry BCM Group and of the Institute of Operational Risk, and has responded to consultation processes run by the Basel Committee and also by the EBA.

Michael has written a number of peer-reviewed papers on Operational & Reputational Risk covering: quantifying emerging risks; modelling capital; stress testing; AI and the “Digital Revolution”; and Climate Change. He periodically guest lectures at several UK & international universities, and Michael received an award in 2014 from the Institute of Operational Risk for his contribution to the profession.

He has had two books published: “Managing Operational Risk” in 2016, and “Ten Laws of Operational Risk” in 2021.
