Profile
Dr. Alex Murray is a built environment economist with special interests in the private financing of publicly funded infrastructure, the industrial organisation of built environment sectors, procurement strategy and supply chains dynamics. Starting his career in the Corporate Finance function at KPMG in London, his development of methods to collate and apply public datasets to monitor operational infrastructure provide the foundations for his PhD research on infrastructure asset whole life cost and value.
Alex spent 8 years as a researcher and lecturer at UCL’s Bartlett School of Construction and Project Management, where his research on the corporate finance strategies of contractors fed into a 2013 commission on trade credit practices in the construction industry, published along-side the 2013 UK Government construction strategy. Until recently, Alex was a Senior Analyst at the UK Government Cabinet Office, Infrastructure and Projects Authority. His work as a civil servant focused on generating insight on the cost and performance of historic capital investment using both public and private finance, alongside work streams tracking investors in Public Private Partnership contracts and helping assess the capacity of the construction industry to meet policy objectives and growing capital programmes.
Alex joined Preqin as Vice President in the Research Insights team in late summer 2020 and specialises in coverage of the Infrastructure asset class.
