Sustainability at BIO-Europe
EBD Group is committed to running events which are both environmentally sustainable and socially responsible. Please review the information below to learn more about our sustainability efforts and the steps you can take to make a difference.
HELP US RESTORE AND PLANT A MILLION MANGROVES
For every 30 meeting requests attendees respond to we will plant one mangrove tree – a project we can all enjoy supporting, as a part of our wider commitment to delivering a sustainable event.
We are excited to be supporting the Million Mangroves project. Mangroves– trees that live on the edge of land and sea – provide crucial wildlife habitats, are an excellent carbon sink (four times more than a rainforest), protect the coast from flooding and erosion and also provide local communities with a key source of food and income. In recent years many vital mangrove habitats have been destroyed, but by supporting their restoration you can help us reinstate these wonderful, hard-working trees that are helping combat the challenges of climate change.
It’s more polite to decline than ignore a request. Help us to drive up the meeting response rate and do good at the same time!
Sustainability Initiatives
We are proud to deliver you a sustainable event by launching the initiatives outlined below.
Digital Event Guide
Our event guide will be delivered in a 100% digital format this year, significantly reducing our usage of paper products during the live experience. We'll have QR codes onsite that attendees can easily scan with their smartphone to pull up the agenda on their mobile devices.
Eliminate Other Printed Materials
No physical mail promotional material referring to the conference
Use of digital signage wherever possible
Partnering schedules will not be printed onsite this year. All attendees are expected to make use of their mobile and laptop devices to stay on top of their meeting schedule
Food and Beverage
Significant efforts are made to reduce food waste by anticipating precise delegate numbers
Menus are seasonal and regional, resulting in reduction of meat overall
Chinaware and cutlery are offered whenever possible. In cases where disposables are necessary, we have switched to biodegradable materials (e.g. watercooler cups)
Lanyards and Name Badges
Paper-only name badges without plastic holders are administered
Lanyards are ensured to be collected and fully recycled post-event. We also encourage attendees to bring their own lanyards.
A Drive For Innovation
Optimizing partneringONE as a driver for innovation within the life science industry to enable attendees to partner with anyone around the globe
Facilitating innovation by encouraging start-ups to attend our events and offering start-up programming, start-up presentation tracks and program sessions with Academic Innovators and Nextgen Companies
Global Genes Partnership
A long-standing relationship with Global Genes, a non-profit organization to support patient-industry interaction
My First BIO-Europe Program
This year, BIO-Europe first-time attendees will have the opportunity to participate in a tour of the venue on Sunday, October 23, 2022. This tour will allow first-time attendees the opportunity to learn the venue and prepare in getting their partnering meetings underway on Monday, October 24, when the event kicks off.
Active Mind and Body
Break-n'-Breathe and Stretch sessions will be offered live and on-demand
Several activity groups will be offered (e.g., Strava Club, Biotech Bikers)
Our "Better Stand" Program
Per our commitment to the evolution of the exhibition industry, we aim to ensure that we are delivering the best possible experience for our customers. We believe that by moving away from the use of disposable exhibition booths, we will improve the ease, quality, safety, and sustainability of the exhibitor experience at our events. We encourage our exhibitors to minimize handouts by utilizing our digital download QR code technology at their booths.
Power
We will offset non-renewable power during the event
We will ensure all added lighting is energy efficient
Encouraging Train Travel
We encourage delegates based in Germany, or close neighbouring countries, to use the train to travel to Leipzig. In cooperation with Deutsche Bahn, we are offering a discounted event ticket for train travel.
Networking Train
EBD Group, together with MC Services and BioM, is introducing the BIO-Europe Networking train!
Start your networking early and reduce your carbon footprint at the same time!
If you are close to one of these stops, join your peers for a ride through Germany!

DIVERSITY, EQUITY AND INCLUSION AT BIO-Europe
Our mission is to give our colleagues, the markets we serve, and our wider communities access to extraordinary people and diverse insights that brings us together and celebrates authenticity. Through our live and data-driven digital services, we cultivate connections, provide meaningful content, and strive to remain a global leader. We celebrate unique perspectives and sharing all ideas within a safe and transparent environment. We believe in sustainability and continuous learning as it strengthens our people, our products, and our markets. We believe that to be more, we must do more. Together, we will continue to listen, innovate, and act as a driver of change to build a business that reflects the communities we connect.
HOW ARE WE BUILDING A SUSTAINABLE EVENT?
We believe a sustainable event focuses on three main aspects...
Social Responsibility
We want to run BIO-Europe in a socially responsible manner. To do so, we are focusing on:
- Doing business safely and ethically
- Considering wellbeing and accessibility
- Creating a positive impact on our host cities and measuring those impacts
- Supporting sponsors and partners in donating to local and industry-related charities
Environmental Responsibility
BIO-Europe will be run in an increasingly environmentally responsible manner, focusing on:
- Reducing carbon emissions
- Designing our events to eliminate waste
- Considering sustainability credentials for every item sourced for the event
Sustainable Development
Our aim for BIO-Europe is to promote long-term sustainable development — not only in the way we run the event, but also in how it's implemented in the market as a whole. We are committing to:
- Using our content to support the sustainability of the bioprocessing industry
- Developing close partnerships with relevant charities, companies and associations, and giving them a platform to promote their work in the field
- Facilitating discussions on pertinent topics including: diversity & inclusion, gender balance, sustainability trends, the impact on the environment & more.
FASTERFORWARD TO ZERO
FasterForward is BIO-Europe's approach to sustainability — moving faster to become a zero waste and net zero carbon business.
A series of activities and commitments carried out by Informa and it's partners between 2020-2025 will ensure our events continue to become more sustainable, delivering a truly positive impact to the markets we serve. We will also actively help our partners, customers, and wider markets to achieve the same. Our FasterForward commitments include:
- Enable one million disconnected people to access networks and knowledge by 2025
- Become carbon neutral across our events by 2025
- Halve the waste generated through our events by 2025
- Embed sustainability inside 100% of our events by 2025
