Dr. Ray Deshaies, PhDDistinguished Fellow at AmgenSpeaker
Profile
At Amgen, I am a Distinguished Fellow and serve as an ambassador of Amgen Research. Previously, I was head of Global Research and led the team responsible for identifying the most innovative technology and targets in drug discovery. Prior to joining Amgen, I was a professor at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) an executive officer in Caltech’s Division of Biology and Biological Engineering, and an Investigator of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. My lab at Caltech/Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigated the cellular machinery that mediates protein degradation by the ubiquitin-proteasome system (UPS), and how this machinery regulates cell division.
In addition to my academic work, I co-founded Proteolix in 2003 and Cleave Therapeutics in 2011. Proteolix initiated development of Kyprolis®.
I received my bachelor's degree in biochemistry from Cornell University and a Ph.D. in biochemistry from the University of California, Berkeley. In 2011, I was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and in 2016 to the National Academy of Sciences.
