Lucas Coelho is the Director of STEX, an engineering company in Lisbon developing second-generation and advanced bioethanol projects. Portuguese-Brazilian, he spent the first part of his career in Brazil's ethanol sector and the last ten years in Portugal, where STEX has carried out feasibility studies for some of the country's leading players in waste management and fuels. An industrial pharmacist with an MSc and a PhD in chemical engineering, he personally supervises STEX's Lisbon pilot plant, which runs the full chain from biomass deconstruction through hydrolysis and fermentation to distillation. His work makes the case for decentralized biorefineries integrated into industrial assets that already exist, with ethanol treated as a platform for chemicals, extracts and SAF rather than as a low-margin fuel.
