WS501 - 300 Main: Lessons Learned From Building a 42-Story Hybrid Structure with DELTABEAM®

Presented by Peikko Group

10:30 - 11:30am | Room 703

Currently, 300 Main in Winnipeg, Canada, is the tallest existing building between Toronto and Calgary. What makes it unique is its true hybrid superstructure approach between steel and concrete allowing for minimal floor-to-floor height, a minimal crew size for construction, and the ability to build during harsh Canadian winters. The foundation of stability lies in its concrete core, while ingenious employment of wide flange steel columns, perimeter beams, and shallow composite beams forms its floors. This ingenious choice slashes the building’s height by over 40 feet compared to conventional steel structures. This height reduction triggers a domino effect: decreased wind loads, substantial savings on the curtain wall system, and a greater number of floors being supported by the existing foundations. Coupled with UL-rated composite beams, lightweight precast hollow-core slabs eliminate the need for fireproofing over a substantial area. 300 Main boldly underscores how pioneering structural design not only shatters height barriers but also dramatically enhances a building’s cost efficiency.

Thankfully there are more data available to the construction industry than ever before to support and guide forward-looking decisions even during the most difficult of times. During this session, Michael Guckes, Senior Economist with ConstructConnect, will present a data-driven review and outlook for the 2024 North American construction market. TS500 - Geothermal Exchange Explained: A Heating and Cooling Solution on the Path to Net-Zero Emissions

Presented by Subterra Renewables

9:00 - 10:00am | Room 703

The building sector is responsible for the majority of carbon emissions in urban centers. As governments enact new policies on the path to net-zero emissions by 2050, the building industry is shifting to green technologies and renewable energy resources. This seminar examines how geothermal exchange systems use the Earth’s constant temperature to heat and cool buildings without emitting carbon. Their contribution to building energy and carbon performance is reviewed, as are installation options, the design and construction process, the economics of their installation and operation, the energy-as-a-service model, and the numerous benefits of geothermal exchange systems in a variety of applications. We will discuss the greenhouse effect’s impact on climate change and natural disasters and the building sector’s role on the annual carbon emissions inventory; explain how geothermal exchange systems save energy and reduce carbon emissions, relative to conventional (fossil-based) systems, and are an integral part of net-zero building design; identify various geothermal exchange system applications and the construction, comfort, and space-saving benefits for building owners and tenants; and will describe the economics of and business case for geothermal exchanges systems through the lens of initial costs (capex), lifetime costs (opex), tax savings, and available innovative financing options.
