The U.S. City with the Most LEED-Certified Buildings
By Nick Vener
Leading the Way for LEED Certification
A LEED-certified building signifies that the overall structure creates a healthier space for people, uses fewer resources, reduces carbon emissions, and improves efficiency while providing operational cost savings. LEED-certified buildings are a significant step towards fighting climate change by providing a critical opportunity to move towards net zero carbon emissions. One U.S. city is leading the way with more LEED-certified projects nationwide than any other major metro-area.
Washington, DC
Every year, Washington, DC, achieves the most square feet of LEED-certified space per capita, according to USGBC.
“Almost 80% of DC-based LEED projects certified in 2022 achieved the Gold or Platinum level, and 34% were recertifications of previously certified projects under the newest versions of LEED.” You can find a list of the top LEED-certified buildings in Washington, DC, here.
As we continue to make progress in improving the resilience of our buildings and communities, Washington, DC, will display the significant steps their city has taken in the green builing movement as Greenbuild's 2023 host city.
On September 26-29, 2023, Greenbuild will take place at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, DC, to celebrate USGBC's 30th anniversary and bring its world-class education to the nation's capital. With more content offered than ever, Greenbuild 2023 will be a significant turning point for our industry, promising to be a year to remember.
